"I absorbed it to meaning that the author (musician/author/producer of a text) may create an item of cultural significance that is then added to the 'media soup', the song in this sense kind of becomes a crouton. When we (the audience) then eat this crouton (or listen to it if we want to shake off this crappy metaphor), the author's initial content they put into the text becomes irrelevant as the listener enjoys the song through a matter of circumstance (where they are when hearing the song) and their own cognitions and subjective pleasures."
